The Gardening Thread.

I thought it might not be a bad idea to have a thread for gardening. I know many people here like to grow their own vegetables and with spring right around the corner it would be nice to hear everyone's tips and tricks for growing the biggest and tastiest vegetables. of course flowers can be included as well.

so what do you grow yourself? what do you know that others could benefit from? who knows... knowing how to grow your own food could save your life some day.

on march 1st I planted some tomato seeds. all 4 pots already sprouted as of this morning. last year I kind of got a late start so I did not get nearly as many tomatoes as I wanted. so this year I probably started too early. but oh well. they will stay inside until it gets warm enough outside anyway. I also want to plant some habanero peppers which I have never tried before.

living in an apartment limits the number of plants I can grow but some are better than none. not to mention that home grown vegetables are so much more tasty than store bought.

so not really being an expert on gardening I am ready to learn from everyone else's experience!

You can have my freedom as soon as I'm done with it!!!

I add Osmocote plant food everytime I plant anything...flowers, shrubbery, trees and/or vegetables. I call it "magic pellets" and that kinda speaks for itself!

Lot of well aged manure from the barn goes into the gardens. I dont use any chemical fertilizers. they deplete and do nothing to actually build good healthy soil.
Tomatoes, 5 different kinds, peppers, 3 different kinds, cucumbers, melons, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, brussel sprouts, potatoes, about 8 different kinds of lettuce, spinach, soup beans, chives (always there) and lots of other herbs, carrots, beets, squash, greens, blackberries (always there), okra.... did I miss anything? anyone who wants to volunteer to help can reap the rewards at harvest!!!!

Mojo, I would love to volunteer to help, but that would be quite a commute, from Virginia.

Hey.....let me know when you plan on being here, I need to get the out-house painted. I'll need to give the wolfhounds a bath too so they're ready to receive their countryman! LOL
I plant several tomatoes, Russian, Amish and some others I've picked up from a few different heirloom sites, and the peppers are all sweet type as I cant handle the hot ones! But I try to shake it up a bit with some Italian types and some mexicans.

nice. I've loved tomatoes all my life. they're one of the best things on earth in my opinion. I just got into eating bell peppers about 5 or 6 years ago. I never liked them before that, but everytime I tried them they were cooked. so after eating them fresh and raw I decided they are good for me too
I also got into eating raw hot peppers last year after reading about lots of health benifits that they provide. I mean I liked spicy foods pretty much my whole life but after eating a sandwich with butter and grated habanero pepper.... now that's hot...
I just picked up some fresh habaneros today. I cut one open and pulled the seeds and put them on a plate to dry them for a week and I will try growing my own. I could only find the red habanero seeds being sold in stores around here but I wanted the orange one's which is why I decided to just dry some out and plant them next week. after pulling the seeds out of course i had to take a nice bite of it... and my mouth is still burning a little good stuff.

we hope to till the "dung" into the garden in the next few weeks. The blueberries get the our rabbit's leavings. The other I hope to get from a local farmer.

Know what you mean. Cold frames for the early salad veggies work. But the big tillers just gunk up in the soil right now.

What a day. 72 degrees, tons of sun and a light breeze. Got into the garden with the tiller, ground was very work-able. Took another load of manure to the big garden, disced it in.
Got into the green house and got the seeds all started. Laid out the direct sow seed.
Transplanted 9 blackberry bushes................
Spring has sprung and I'm lovin' it!!!
